Portfolio > Life Entombed

I have always been enamored with the human condition and the need for record keeping. We keep records to remind, to reflect, and to share with future generations. The reflection process is what leaves us vulnerable to interpret and reinterpret events. I have struggled with trying to keep a diary, and to no avail. Visually, however, I can pin point and reflect on a number of occasions that have been pivotal in my life. The process of revisualizing these events has allowed me to retain a sharper image of my personal history. I choose to recreate these key events in paint and encase the most precious of memories. This is an act not only of entombing, but of excavating the event and fleshing out the most illuminating details. Encaustics allow me to build textural elements and to encase these textures making each painting feel precious. Even words encased have a forever feel; while the irony is that wax in high temperatures will melt away leaving the words, and the moment vulnerable again.
